Western Australia Election: Everything You Need to Know

The Western Australian state election is fast approaching and will take place on Saturday, March 8

This election will determine the state’s leadership and direction for the coming years.

Here’s everything you need to know!

Who Are the Candidates?

Roger Cook (Labor)

As the current Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook is leading the Labor Party into the election, focusing on infrastructure, healthcare, and economic growth. Labor has been in power since 2017 and aims to continue its policies on job creation and renewable energy investment.

Shane Love (National)

Representing the National Party, Shane Love is advocating for regional investment, improvements in agriculture, and stronger representation for rural communities. His party seeks to enhance services outside metropolitan areas and address key regional concerns.

Libby Mettam (Liberal)

The leader of the Liberal Party, Libby Mettam, is campaigning on a platform of economic recovery, small business support, and law and order. The Liberals aim to unseat Labor and form a new government focused on reducing the cost of living and stimulating business growth.

Key Issues at Stake

This election will shape Western Australia's policies on several critical issues, including:

  • Healthcare: Addressing hospital wait times, mental health services, and funding for medical facilities.
  • Infrastructure: Expansion of public transport, road networks, and urban development.
  • Economy: Job creation, cost of living pressures, and government spending priorities.
  • Environment: Climate action, renewable energy investments, and resource management.

Final Thoughts

While the Western Australian election may seem like a clear-cut victory for the Labor Party, it must be noted that the Liberal Party is not yet out of the race.

Australian politics can be unpredictable, and if voters wake up on March 8 and decide that they do not want to be under the rule of Labor for a further four years, a Labor loss is entirely possible.
