WA Labor Pledges $5,000 Home Battery Rebate to Cut Energy Bills

Western Australia’s Labor government has unveiled a bold plan to slash household energy costs with a $5,000 home battery rebate.
Regional households on the Horizon Power grid could receive an even higher rebate of $7,500, making battery storage more accessible than ever.
$387 Million Residential Battery Scheme
Premier Roger Cook announced the $387 million Residential Battery Scheme at WA Labor’s official election campaign launch.
The initiative aims to support over 200 megawatt hours (MWh) of small-scale battery storage, equivalent to the first stage of the state-owned Kwinana Big Battery.
If Labor is re-elected in March, the rebate will be available from July 2025, helping households store excess rooftop solar power and reduce reliance on the grid.
The scheme will also include a no-interest loan program, making battery storage even more affordable.
Unlocking Solar Potential
WA has some of the highest rooftop solar penetration in the country, but without adequate battery storage, much of this clean energy goes unused.
By incentivising home battery adoption, the WA Labor government aims to stabilise the grid, lower power bills, and support the state’s transition to renewable energy.
A Win for Households and the Grid
This initiative could be the difference between current state premier, Roger Cook's successful re-election campaign or a massive shift in power, giving Western Australia back to the opposition.
Whether or not the battery rebate is at the front or back of the minds of Western Australian voters come election time is, for now, uncertain; however, there is no doubt that if re-elected, the Labor-backed rebate would be a huge plus for Western Australian citizens.
