The Next Generation Of Investors Are Considering An SMSF

SMSF setup has grown exponentially in 2023 and shows no signs of slowing down in 2024.

A study by the ASX, the Australian Investor Study, found that nearly 20% of investors are looking at establishing an SMSF.

What Is The Motivation?

The study contains the following excerpt in regard to the next generations motivation to setup an SMSF:

“While traditionally SMSFs have been the domain of experienced investors with higher fund balances, SMSFs could become more appealing to younger investors in the future, because they tend to provide greater control over the investors’ investments and retirement savings,” the report stated.

Another huge motivation factor is the difference in retirement savings, with SMSFs generally having higher retirement portfolios.

SMSFs on average have $1.77 million in their SMSF, while industry super fund holders have around $463,000 for retirement.

The Tax Implications

Another huge consideration for the next generation of SMSF investors is the tax advantages of establishing an SMSF, with the report stating:

“These product types may be attractive for SMSF owners because of their potential tax advantages or because they may provide a regular and stable income stream compared with other investment products,” the report stated.
