The Key Issues Driving Australia's Agenda in 2025: A Federal Election Year

As Australia heads into 2025, a pivotal federal election year, voters are increasingly vocal about the challenges that demand immediate attention.

Findings by JWS Research have identified the key issues Australians care about the most, from the cost of living to housing and healthcare, painting a clear picture of public priorities as political leaders prepare their campaigns.

This year’s election is shaping up to be defined by these critical concerns, as Australians demand policies that directly address their everyday struggles and secure a better future.

The Top Priorities for Australians in 2025

Cost of Living

With 80% of Australians citing it as their top priority, the cost of living is undoubtedly the defining issue of this election.

Inflation, rising food and energy prices, and housing affordability have left households feeling the squeeze.

Political leaders will need to offer tangible solutions to alleviate financial pressures, such as tax relief, subsidies, or direct cost-of-living measures.

Housing Affordability

The housing crisis looms large, with 52% of respondents calling for immediate action.

Spiralling property prices, rental shortages, and high mortgage rates have made homeownership increasingly out of reach for many Australians.

Voters will be looking for bold reforms in housing policy, including investment in social housing and incentives to boost supply.

Healthcare

Ranked as the third-highest priority, healthcare remains a cornerstone of voter concerns for 51% of respondents.

Issues like hospital overcrowding, long waiting times, and rising out-of-pocket costs highlight the need for more funding and reforms to make healthcare accessible and equitable for all Australians.

The Economy

Economic stability and growth are also front of mind, with 39% of Australians ranking it as a critical issue.

As the country recovers from global and local economic challenges, policies aimed at boosting productivity, supporting small businesses, and creating jobs will resonate strongly with voters.

Employment

Employment, tied closely to economic concerns, remains a priority for 27% of Australians.

With shifts in the job market, voters expect initiatives that promote job security, upskilling, and innovation in emerging industries.

Interest Rates

Rising interest rates have placed additional pressure on household budgets, particularly for mortgage holders.

Currently, 25% of Australians are concerned, and addressing these concerns will require a careful balance between monetary policy and government support.

Environment

Although slightly lower on the list, environmental issues remain an important concern for many voters.

Climate change, renewable energy investment, and sustainable development will likely feature prominently in the election narrative.

Energy

Energy affordability and reliability are critical concerns for 21% of Australians, particularly as utility costs rise.

Voters will be looking for policies that promote clean energy while ensuring affordable and secure access.
