PM Pledges to Freeze Beer Tax Ahead of Federal Election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to freeze tax increases on beer poured at pubs, a move widely seen as part of Labor’s election strategy.
Current Beer Tax System
Under the current system, the excise on beer and spirits rises twice a year—in February and August—in line with inflation. This automatic increase has led to growing concerns from hospitality venues and patrons about rising drink prices.
Labor’s Proposal
If re-elected in the upcoming federal election, Labor will pause the biannual indexation of the draught beer excise for two years. The freeze is aimed at easing cost pressures on pubs and breweries while appealing to voters ahead of the election.
Public Reaction
While this is undoubtedly welcome news, one question remains:
Is the cost of beer at the forefront of the minds of Australian voters?
