Money, Power, and Pop Stars: The Billionaire Influence on Australian Politics

Money talks in politics, and few voices are louder than those of billionaires. The latest Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) data has pulled back the curtain on the biggest political donors of the 2023-24 financial year, and once again, familiar names dominate the list.

At the centre of it all? Billionaire packaging tycoon Anthony Pratt, a man who knows how to play both sides of the political fence—often with a star-studded backdrop.

Pratt’s Million-Dollar Gesture and the Katy Perry Connection

Anthony Pratt tipped a cool $1 million into Anthony Albanese’s campaign fund in January 2024. The next month, he hosted a private event at his lavish Raheen mansion, featuring a performance by global pop star Katy Perry. Among the elite guests? The Prime Minister himself. While there’s no suggestion of wrongdoing, the timing is undeniably interesting.

Pratt’s donation was the single largest individual contribution to any party in the financial year, further cementing his influence in the political landscape. But if history tells us anything, it’s that Pratt doesn’t pick just one team—he backs whoever is in power.

In previous years, he’s donated millions to the Liberal Party, often linked to exclusive events designed to benefit the government of the day.

Climate Cash and the Battle for Influence

While Pratt was cutting cheques for Labor, climate-conscious investors Rob Keldoulis and Marcus Catsaras were pouring over $1 million each into Climate 200, the fundraising juggernaut behind the teal independents.

Their donations made them the joint-largest contributors to any political cause in Australia last year, highlighting the continued financial firepower behind the movement reshaping the political landscape.

With deep-pocketed donors backing both major parties and independents, the battle for influence is as much about financial muscle as it is about policy and principles.

The teal independents, propped up by support from wealthy benefactors, continue to challenge the traditional two-party dominance, ensuring that money flows not just to those in power but to those seeking to change the system.

What Does This Mean for the Next Election?

Despite Pratt’s generous donation to Labor, political momentum appears to be shifting.

Recent opinion polls suggest that Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is on track to become Australia’s next prime minister.

If that happens, history suggests Pratt’s money could start flowing back towards the Liberal Party, ensuring he remains in favour with the government of the day.

The AEC’s data serves as a reminder of just how much wealth shapes political fortunes in Australia.

This leaves Australian voters wondering, how much do the billionaire friends of politicians influence the great nation of Australia?

Is our nation truly a democracy if votes can be bought and political opinions can be swayed?

We have to expect more from our nation's best and brightest, this means holding them accountable for accepting large political donations that may impact the future of Australian politics.
