Building Australia's Defence Future: New Henderson Defence Precinct to Boost Jobs and Naval Capabilities

The Albanese Government is laying the groundwork for a state-of-the-art Defence Precinct at Western Australia’s Henderson shipyard, a move set to transform the nation’s naval capabilities and economic landscape.

This consolidated Commonwealth-owned precinct aims to support continuous naval shipbuilding and nuclear-powered submarine maintenance, securing Australia’s maritime defence for the long term.

A Boost for Western Australia's Economy

With tens of billions of dollars in investment earmarked for the precinct over the next two decades, Henderson is set to become a major hub for defence operations in Australia’s west.

This substantial investment promises to create approximately 10,000 local jobs, many of which will be high-skilled and well-paid positions.

The project represents a significant boost to Western Australia's economy, fostering local talent and advancing workforce skills in the defence sector.

Continuous Shipbuilding and Advanced Submarine Maintenance

The Henderson Defence Precinct is envisioned as a central site for continuous shipbuilding and submarine maintenance, a vital part of Australia’s defence strategy.

By focusing on nuclear-powered submarine upkeep, the facility will play a key role in ensuring that Australia remains at the forefront of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. This site will strengthen local defence capabilities, offering Australia more flexibility and readiness in a changing global landscape.

Investing in Australia's Security and Workforce

The development of Henderson as a defence hub reflects the government’s commitment to both national security and local job creation. The new precinct aligns with Australia's broader defence goals, providing the infrastructure needed for continuous operations and responding to emerging security challenges.

Henderson: A Strategic Asset for the Nation

The Defence Precinct at Henderson isn’t just an economic win for Western Australia—it’s a strategic asset for the entire nation. As Australia reinforces its commitment to a secure maritime presence, Henderson will be at the heart of this effort, driving innovation, supporting skilled jobs, and enhancing Australia’s defence capabilities well into the future.
